Wood Floor Care Under Area Rugs in Manhattan Apartments

A rug protects a wood floor, until it starts hurting it. Trapped grit, spills that soak through, the wrong pad and uneven sun can all leave marks on the oak underneath. Here is how to keep both the rug and the floor in good shape, and how we clean rugs without soaking your wood.

Quick answer: A rug keeps shoes and furniture off your wood floor, but it also hides what happens underneath. Vacuum the rug often so grit does not work through to the finish, blot spills fast so liquid does not reach the wood, use a breathable pad made for wood floors, and move or rotate the rug now and then so the floor fades evenly. When the rug needs a deep clean, sturdy rugs can be cleaned in place for $99 with the floor protected; delicate rugs go to our plant with pickup and delivery for $3 per square foot.

If you are thinking about wood floor cleaning in Manhattan, start by lifting a corner of your biggest rug. Most apartments here have oak strip or herringbone floors with a rug on top, and the wood under that rug lives a very different life from the wood around it. Here is what can go wrong down there and how to prevent it.

Why the floor under a rug needs attention

A rug takes the heel strikes, the chair legs and the dog’s claws. But it is also a sponge and a sieve. Fine dirt sifts down through the pile, spills soak through the backing, and the rug pad holds whatever reaches it against the finish.

Because you cannot see the floor, problems build quietly: dull patches, fine scratches, a dark ring from a leaking plant pot, or a gray spot from months of pet accidents.

Grit: the slow sandpaper

Street dirt in Manhattan is gritty. It comes in on shoes from sidewalks, the subway and salted crosswalks, and much of it falls into the rug. Each step presses the rug down and rubs those fine grains against the floor finish, a little at a time.

The National Wood Flooring Association warns that when dirt is tracked onto a wood floor it gets dragged across the surface, “which can damage the existing finishes” (NWFA). Under a rug, that dragging happens out of sight.

  • Vacuum busy rugs at least twice a week, and go slowly so the vacuum can pull grit up from the base.
  • Once a month, fold the rug back and vacuum or dust-mop the wood underneath.
  • Put a small, washable mat inside the door to catch salt and sand before they reach the living room rug.
  • Take shoes off at the door if your household can.

Spills and pet accidents that soak through

A spill that sits between a thick rug, a pad and an oak floor for two days is a real problem. Liquid that gets through the backing can stay trapped against the wood, where it can mark the finish or make boards swell and cup.

Pet urine is the worst case. It soaks through quickly, it is hard to see from above, and the smell can stay in the rug even after the top looks clean. We explain why the odor keeps coming back in our guide to pet urine smell in Manhattan apartments. If you know a pet has been using one spot, lift the rug and check the wood. Our pet stain removal treats the rug itself.

Tip: After a big spill, do not just blot the top. Fold the rug back, wipe the wood dry with a soft cloth, and prop the wet part of the rug up so air can reach both sides. The NWFA’s advice for wood is to clean spills right away “with a dry or slightly damp cloth.”

Choosing a rug pad for wood floors

The pad does three jobs: it stops the rug from sliding, it adds cushion, and it keeps the rug’s rough back from rubbing the floor. We prefer pads made for wood floors over thin plastic mats that do not let air through. The NWFA recommends “breathable” rugs at entrances for a reason: wood floors do better when air can move.

  • Buy a pad sold for use on wood floors, and check the label for your type of finish.
  • Felt, or felt with a natural rubber grip, is a common choice under larger rugs.
  • Trim the pad a little smaller than the rug so the edges lie flat.
  • Replace a pad that has gone flat, crumbly or sticky.

Sun lines and uneven color

Many Manhattan living rooms get strong light through big windows. Over the years, light changes how wood looks. A rug that never moves blocks that light, so when it finally comes up, you may see a clear rectangle where the floor looks different from the rest. House Digest notes that rearranging area rugs regularly helps “prevent uneven fading” (House Digest).

Turning the rug helps the rug too: a half-turn every six months evens out fading and walkway wear.

Radiators, dry heat and summer humidity

Pre-war buildings run hot in winter and humid in summer, and wood moves with the air. The NWFA suggests keeping homes at “30-50 percent humidity year-round.” In practice that can mean a humidifier in January and air conditioning in July.

Leave a little space between the rug edge and the radiator, and never dry boots or wet towels on a radiator above a rug.

How we clean rugs on top of wood floors

Done right, rug cleaning does not mean water on your oak. The NWFA warns that wet mops and steam mops “will damage the finish or even the wood over long periods of time,” and we keep that in mind on every in-home visit.

Our area rug cleaning covers both options, and we decide with you after we see the rug. Fine hand-knotted pieces usually go out. Our Oriental rug cleaning checks dyes and fringe before any washing, and our post on signs a Persian rug needs a wash helps you decide when it is time.

6 mistakes that hurt the wood under a rug

Never lifting the rugGrit and spills build up below for years without anyone seeing them.
Plastic mat as a padIt does not breathe like a pad made for wood floors.
Steam mop near the rugSteam and standing water are hard on wood finishes.

A simple care plan

  1. Every week

Vacuum the rug well and dust-mop the open wood around it.

  2. Every month

Fold the rug back, clean the floor underneath and check for spots or dampness.

  3. Every six months

Turn the rug around, check the pad, and look at the floor near windows and radiators.

  4. Once a year

Book a professional rug cleaning, more often with pets or a busy entry.

  5. When the rug is out

Use the empty floor: clean it, and ask us about wood floor cleaning while the room is clear.

Wool rugs do not like heavy water, so read our list of things never to do to a wool rug before any home cleaning. For a fresh spill on a rug, stain removal works best when you call us early, before the liquid has time to reach the floor.

Want your rug clean and the wood under it safe?

Wood floor and rug questions

Will rug cleaning damage my hardwood floor?

No, not when it is done right. For in-home cleaning we protect the floor under and around the rug and use strong suction, so water does not sit on the wood. If a rug is too delicate or too wet-sensitive to clean in place, we take it to our plant with pickup and delivery instead.

What kind of rug pad is best for wood floors?

Pick a breathable pad that is sold for use on wood floors, such as felt or felt with a natural rubber grip, and check that it suits your floor finish. Avoid thin plastic mats that trap moisture, and replace any pad that has gone flat, crumbly or sticky.

Can you clean the wood floor while my rug is at the plant?

Yes. When a rug goes out for plant cleaning, the floor under it is empty, which is a good time for wood floor cleaning. Wood floor cleaning gets a free quote, and the price is confirmed before we start.

How much does rug cleaning cost in Manhattan?

In-home rug cleaning is $99, and plant rug cleaning with pickup and delivery is $3 per square foot. Carpet is $55 per room and sofas are $99. New customers get 20% off the first cleaning.
