Quick answer: Upper West Side homes are hard on rugs and sofas in a very specific way: park mud and dog paws at the door, kids eating and playing on the living room rug, and a lot of furniture packed into brownstone floors and pre-war rooms. Vacuum entry and play rugs twice a week, blot spills from the outside in, and book a deep clean once a year (twice with pets or small kids). Sturdy rugs are cleaned in your home for $99, delicate rugs go to our plant with free pickup and delivery for $3 per square foot, and a sofa is $99. New customers get 20% off the first cleaning.

If you are looking for carpet cleaning Upper West Side homes can count on, this guide is the short version of what our crews see on the blocks between Central Park and Riverside Park. It is written for families, dog owners and anyone in a walk-up who wants their rugs and sofa to last.

What makes Upper West Side homes different

The Upper West Side is a neighborhood of side-street brownstones, walk-ups and big pre-war apartment houses along West End Avenue and Riverside Drive. Many homes are full family homes, not small studios. That means more people, more meals, more toys and often a dog, all living on the same few rugs and one hard-working sofa.

There is also the parks factor. Two large parks sit on either side of the neighborhood, and almost everyone uses them every day. What comes back on boots, strollers and paws ends up on the first rug inside the door.

Park mud, wet paws and the entry rug

After a rainy walk, a dog will shake off and then lie down on the nearest soft surface. Wet soil, grass and sand go straight into the pile. Fall leaves and winter slush make it worse. Once the mud dries, it turns into fine grit that cuts the fibers every time someone steps on it.

  • Keep a towel by the door and wipe paws before the dog reaches the living room rug.
  • Put a small washable mat inside the door, and wash it often.
  • Let mud dry fully, then vacuum it up. Rubbing wet mud only pushes it deeper.
  • Vacuum the entry rug twice a week, slowly, in two directions.

Tip: If the entry rug is wool, do not soak it with a home carpet shampooer after a muddy day. Our list of things never to do to a wool rug explains why too much water causes browning and shrinking.

Kids, crumbs and the living room rug

In family apartments, the living room rug is the play area, the snack table and sometimes the art studio. Juice, yogurt, crayon and play dough are the usual suspects. Food spills feed odors and attract dust, and sticky spots grab dirt so they turn gray fast.

For fresh spills, scoop up solids, then blot with a white cloth and cool water from the outside in. Do not scrub, and do not use colored towels or strong household sprays on a good rug. If a mark will not move, call us early: our area rug cleaning works best before a spill has had weeks to set.

Brownstones and walk-ups: getting equipment upstairs

Many Upper West Side brownstones have narrow stairs and no elevator. That is not a problem for us, but it helps to plan. Our crew runs the hose up the stairs and protects the steps and the banister on the way.

Rugs that go to the plant are rolled and carried down by our crew. This October our crew picked up rugs from an apartment in the West 70s for cleaning at our plant. That building did not ask for a certificate of insurance (COI). Many larger buildings do, so check with your super or managing agent before the visit. Our guide to cleaning in co-ops and doorman buildings covers COIs and service elevators.

The family sofa

A family sofa in a busy home takes body oils on the arms and headrest, crumbs between cushions, and pet hair in every seam. Light fabrics show it first: the arms go gray and the seat cushions get a shadow where people sit most.

Our couch cleaning in Manhattan is $99 per sofa. We check the fabric tag first, vacuum, pre-treat the arms and seats, then rinse and extract. Sectionals and armchairs get a free quote, and the price is confirmed before we start.

Clean the rug at home or at the plant?

Many Upper West Side apartments have a mix: a synthetic play rug in the kids’ room and an older wool or hand-knotted rug in the living room. They need different care.

Fine pieces are handled through our Oriental rug cleaning, where dyes and fringe are checked before any washing.

Pet accidents on rugs and sofas

A puppy or an older dog can turn one corner of a rug into a habit spot. On top, it may look fine. Underneath, urine spreads into the backing and the pad, and the smell comes back on humid days. We explain why in our guide to pet urine smell in Manhattan apartments.

Our pet stain removal treats the spot down to the backing. A rug with a lot of urine usually goes to the plant, where it can be washed through, rinsed and dried flat.

6 mistakes we see in busy family homes

Scrubbing a spillIt spreads the stain and frays the pile.
Vacuuming wet mudWait until it is dry, then vacuum.
Too much soapLeftover soap grabs dirt and the spot comes back darker.
Pet spray on silk or woolStrong sprays can move dyes on natural fibers.
Rental machine on a fine rugToo much water and not enough suction.
Waiting a year on a pet spotUrine sets deeper the longer it sits.

A simple yearly plan

  1. Every week

Vacuum entry and play rugs twice, and vacuum the sofa seams.

  2. Every month

Flip and rotate sofa cushions, and check under the rug for damp spots.

  3. Before winter

Set out a door mat and a paw towel for slush and road salt.

  4. Once a year

Deep clean rugs and the sofa; twice a year with pets or small kids.

Where else our crews work

Our crews work all over Manhattan: north in Washington Heights, across Midtown Manhattan and Murray Hill, in the Flatiron District, and downtown in the West Village and SoHo. This October a rug pickup in Murray Hill did need a COI, so building rules really do change from block to block. Across the park, our Upper East Side guide covers co-ops and high-rises. See every area on our service areas page.

What it costs

Prices are the same on every block: $99 for in-home rug cleaning, $3 per square foot for plant rug cleaning with free pickup and delivery, $99 per sofa and $55 per room for wall-to-wall carpet. Sectionals and armchairs get a free quote. New customers get 20% off their first cleaning.

Upper West Side rug and sofa questions

Do you clean rugs in brownstones without an elevator?

Yes. Our crew runs the hose up the stairs and protects the steps and banister. Rugs that need plant cleaning are rolled and carried down by our crew.

Is rug and sofa cleaning safe with kids and dogs at home?

Does my building need a certificate of insurance?

Some Upper West Side buildings ask for a COI and some do not. Ask your super or managing agent, and tell us when you book so the paperwork is ready before the visit.

How much does rug and sofa cleaning cost on the Upper West Side?

In-home rug cleaning is $99, plant rug cleaning with free pickup and delivery is $3 per square foot, a sofa is $99 and carpet is $55 per room. New customers get 20% off the first cleaning.
